Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Subsidy Program

Did you know that ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers are among the most energy-intensive pieces of equipment in a laboratory setting? The Auraria Sustainable Campus Program (ASCP) is excited to offer the ULT Freezer Subsidy Program to all three institutions across the Auraria Campus. This program supports laboratories in becoming more energy efficient by upgrading to high efficiency ULT freezers (reducing energy consumption by up to 70%). Eligible freezers must use ≤0.31 kWh/day/cu.ft.

This program helps offset the cost differential between standard and high-efficiency ULT freezers (defined as models using ≤0.31 kWh/day/cu.ft.). By removing this financial barrier, the ASCP aims to increase the use of more energy efficient equipment across campus and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. The program provides up to $5,000 per freezer. Awards are determined through a scoring process that considers freezer age, condition, energy savings potential, lab usage, and financial need. Priority is given to laboratories that replace existing ULT freezers, as these offer the greatest potential for energy and emissions reductions. However, labs with a demonstrated need for new freezer capacity are also encouraged to apply. â€‹

Application Timeline

The ULT Freezer Subsidy Program will run from July 2026 through June 2036, with limiting funding available each year. Interested laboratories must apply during one of the two application periods offered each year.
